Pendleton shirts are true classics — but do you know why? The legendary Board Shirt became iconic through California’s surf culture of the 1950s and 60s, and the same shirts were famously worn by the Beach Boys. Pendleton’s popularity is still built on the very same things today: high-quality wool, timeless patterns, and durable garments that only look better with age. Pendleton Board and Canyon Shirts are made from 100% Umatilla wool, known for its breathability and natural resistance to dirt, water, and odors. For many, a Pendleton becomes the most worn shirt in the wardrobe.
There are shirts — and then there are Pendletons. Pendleton Board and Canyon Shirts belong to that rare category of garments that slowly become true everyday favorites over the years. A traditional, comfortable fit combined with high-quality wool fabric makes this the kind of shirt you keep reaching for again and again — on cool summer evenings, during autumn, in the garage, around town, or even while brewing your morning coffee.
For many people, a Pendleton becomes a year-round favorite shirt. It certainly has for me.
Over 150 years old, Pendleton is one of the most iconic names in American clothing history. The company has remained family-owned for six generations and still weaves its own wool fabrics in Oregon, just as it has done since the early 1900s.
While many brands source ready-made fabrics from elsewhere, Pendleton controls the entire production process from raw wool to finished shirt. You can see and feel it in the quality, texture and — most importantly — longevity. Pendleton wool shirting fabric is still woven in the USA at Pendleton’s own Oregon mills.
Pendleton Board and Canyon Shirts are made from 100% Umatilla wool, known especially for its:
The wool fabric stays looking good for years and works almost like a lightweight jacket in cooler weather. These shirts also rarely need ironing — they tend to look sharp even straight out of a backpack. And perhaps most importantly: wool keeps you warm even when wet.
The Board Shirt became famous in California surf culture already during the 1950s. Before modern wetsuits existed, surfers used fairly creative methods to stay warm in cold water: petroleum jelly on the skin, shorts on, and a Pendleton wool shirt over the top.
Pendleton’s popularity among surfers was largely thanks to wool’s natural performance. The shirts stayed warm even when damp, protected against the wind, and looked great off the beach as well. Combined with khakis for evenings out, the look evolved into an entire style movement.
In the early 1960s, Pendleton shirts also found their way into pop culture. The Majorettes’ 1963 hit White Levis painted a perfect picture of California surf style:
“My boyfriend's always wearin' white Levi's... and his tennis shoes and his surfin' hat and a big plaid Pendleton shirt.”
Levi’s and Pendleton belonged together long before any official collaborations existed.
Around the same time, a young surf band called The Pendletones started building their image wearing Pendleton shirts. Today, the band is better known as the Beach Boys. Their blue Original Surf Plaid shirts appeared on several album covers throughout the 1960s.
The blue Original Surf Plaid (1961) remains the iconic pattern most associated with the Beach Boys to this day — and for good reason.
The appeal of Pendleton comes down to authenticity. The same shirts still work equally well for surfers, skateboarders, motorcyclists, car club enthusiasts and everyday wear.
Over the years, Pendleton plaid shirts have been worn by everyone from Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain to Social Distortion’s Mike Ness, along with countless other rock icons.
This is not fast fashion. It’s a true utility garment that often looks even better with age. It’s still common to see Pendletons from the 1950s through the 1980s actively worn today.
And perhaps that’s exactly why, for many people, a Pendleton is much more than just a plaid shirt.

We try to keep the web pages 100% up to date about item availability. As nothing is perfect, sometimes it fails, ie. you might order something that really isn’t available. If this happens, we will try to contact you. If you haven’t supplied phone or e-mail information and we don’t have something you ordered, we’ll either send your order without the item or not at all. So please include a working e-mail address and do check it after making an order! Once again: we do not use your personal info for any marketing purposes.
Contact us by e-mail or WhatsApp. When sending us e-mail clearly indicate what the message is about. If it’s about an order, provide all the details, like the order number and the name of the person who originally placed the order. When answering to our e-mails, please quote all the previous messages. We receive a lot of e-mails, so when we get a message from john@gmail.com that says “Okay” it’s very hard to find out what’s it all about.
Check your e-mail system that you have sufficient space for new messages. We are fast and reliable, technology isn’t. If you don’t hear from us in a few days, our response has been lost in a spam filter or some other technical problem has occurred.
